Taking advantage of the characteristics of the university hospital, this facility focuses on multidisciplinary therapy: heavy ion radiotherapy combined with surgery or chemotherapy.
Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center (GHMC) was established on June 1, 2005 and is equipped with the newest, heavy ion radiotherapy system for worldwide use.
Their first heavy ion radiotherapy was applied to a patient with prostate cancer. Now the indications have been widened to 10 tyeps of cancers(Prostate cancer, Lung cancer, Liver cancer, Head and neck tumors, Postoperative recurrence of rectal cancer, Bone and soft tissue tumors, Recurrence of lymph node cancer, Skull base tumor, Pancreas cancer). Since GHMC's first heavy ion radiotherapy in 2010, over 2,000 patients received the therapy from this facility by 2016.
